Odoo 20 is coming: is your business ready?

Every year, Odoo ships a major release. Every year, the same question comes up with our clients: migrate now, or wait? With Odoo 20 set to be unveiled in Brussels on 24 September, it’s worth asking early this time, rather than waiting for launch day and reacting to whatever gets announced on stage.

Why this release matters more than the last one

Based on what the publisher has shared so far, Odoo 20 pushes AI further into everyday workflows, instead of treating it as a bolt-on module. Among the changes expected:

  • Natural language search across your data, with no technical query required (available since Odoo 19)
  • Stronger automated checks in accounting, such as duplicate invoice detection
  • A helpdesk that can suggest answers based on similar tickets
  • A touch-friendly mobile experience, with an offline mode for field teams
  • A redesigned Payroll dashboard, focused on day-to-day monitoring
  • A new visual editor for building marketing automation flows
  • A simplified point-of-sale printer setup

Odoo 20 focuses on simplifying day-to-day use through AI, while keeping maintenance manageable for technical teams. To address increasingly specific use cases, Odoo is expanding its native industry solutions, such as hospitality and construction, and is working with its partner ecosystem to cover more specialised sectors, such as car repair.

What this actually means for your operations

Not every change will matter equally to your business. But the underlying logic holds across the board: fewer manual steps, fewer data-entry errors, more time for the work that actually adds value.

A small or mid-sized business currently shuttling data between its ERP and spreadsheets could eliminate much of that manual work through the automation described above. A mobile sales team could gain real independence from a mobile interface built for the field, not adapted from a desktop view. A warehouse or manufacturing team relying on manual stock checks could catch discrepancies earlier, simply because the system flags anomalies on its own instead of waiting for a monthly reconciliation. These are tangible performance gains, not just marketing claims.

Three questions worth asking before launch day

Before jumping into a migration, a quick audit helps. Start here:

  • Will your custom-built modules still work after the update?
  • Are your teams already comfortable with recent tools like Odoo Studio, built-in spreadsheets, or existing automations?
  • Are your current processes actually using the features you already have, even before you think about the next version?

If any answer makes you uncomfortable, it is better to find out now than in the middle of a migration. None of these questions requires a formal project to address — a short conversation with someone who understands your setup is usually enough to get an initial view.

How Captivea supports you through the transition

Over nearly 20 years and 800+ ERP projects across four continents, we've supported as many calm, well-planned migrations as last-minute scrambles. The difference almost always comes down to one thing: how much time went into preparation. In practice, our certified consultants get involved at every stage:

  1. Audit your current setup, custom developments, and existing processes to identify what actually needs to change and what can remain as it is
  2. Prioritise which modules to migrate first, based on their real impact on your business, instead of taking a risky, all-at-once approach
  3. Handle the technical migration, carried out by our certified developers, with testing at every step to avoid unpleasant surprises
  4. Train your teams on the new tools, so adoption keeps pace with the update instead of slowing it down

Nothing is one-size-fits-all — every engagement is tailored to your organisation, your internal processes, and your timelines, not the other way around.

A realistic timeline, no need to rush

Moving to a new major release is not a decision to be taken lightly, and there is no requirement to do it the moment it ships. Odoo continues to support previous versions for several years, which gives you enough time to plan a proper transition instead of scrambling. The right approach remains the same, no matter the version: start with an audit, before you even set a date.

Plan ahead, don't scramble later

A major release does not force anyone into an emergency migration. But it does change the landscape: new features, new standards, and eventually, an end to support for older versions. Businesses that plan ahead save time. Businesses that wait end up managing a crisis instead.

Customised modules, existing integrations, processes specific to your business — every Odoo setup looks different, and the fastest way to know where you stand is to discuss it with someone who knows your industry.
